Terms and Phrases to Know When Talking About Kunekunes

Boar - a male pig Sow - a female pig who has had at least one litter of piglets Gilt - a female pig who has not had piglets Barrow - a neutered/castrated male pig Farrowing - a sow having piglets

In Pig - a pregnant pig In Heat - the time when a female pig is ovulating and can become pregnant, a heat is on average 3 days once every 21 days COI (coefficient of inbreeding)- a mathematical formula that describes how closely pigs are related Agouti - stripping often seen in brown pigs

Wattles - fleshy appendage that hangs under the pigs chin, also called piri piri, kunekunes can have 0, 1, or 2 wattles Top Line - the top of the back of a pig Tail Set - the point where the tail meets the rump

Pasterns - lower front leg structure of a pig, the position and angle of the dew claws indicates the strength of the pasterns

Registered Name - name found on the registration paperwork consisting of breeder's farm name + bloodline + breeders production number + call name On this pedigree, Mabon (call name) was the 8th (production number) Kereopa (bloodline) gilt born at Bel Canto Farm.
